Market day in Tavira

Saturday is the main market day in Tavira, although a handful of vendors are there Monday to Friday as well.  The huge modern market building fills a city block just around the corner from my apt.  It was another sunny day and  I could hear the buzz as I Approached.  All along the outside of the building, not only were the cafes busy, but hundreds milled around the flea market...my kind of place!  There was everything from rusty looking tools, rugs and clothes that appeared left over from the Phoenicians, China, linens, toys, flat tired bikes to jewellery. But I think the top prize goes to the vendor who was trying to unload a camel’s saddle for 70 € ...  too bad my suitcase wasn’t a bit bigger!

After a good look outside, I went to buy my fruit and veggies. That is a bit of a challenge, but all you can do is judge how the produce looks, see the price per kg and hold out your palm full of coins.  The oranges were .70 € kg and I got about 5 delicious ones for .60€. I also bought potatoes, organic carrots and 2 avacado for 1.20 €. When I wanted to buy the strawberries on display...the lady wouldn’t sell them to me...I think she said next week they will be cheap...or something like that was the translation from another customer?  There were many fish counters that were packed with discerning customers inspecting and smelling before they bought. It looked like if the fish weren’t caught that very morning, no sales.  Along the side were several butchers and a couple of bread stalls.  I couldn’t get close enough to see if there was a price on the pigs head or if he was just on display....

  Everything tastes so
good...grown fresh in season and enjoyed on your balcony. Oh I bought that lovely pewter flower vase for 1 €. The engraving says “ Trevor Lane...my main man”. Ha ha wouldn’t he be surprised!

Pigs head for sale or display?
